The Suitcase

Welcome to the newest page! The Suitcase computer.

One day I was poking around in a back room trying to find a good project. I was looking under some stuff and then I finally found it. It was a silver camera case, a really old one. However it was fairly sturday and light. The outside part is like a tinfoil, the edges a stailess steel and the inside wood. I wanted to do this with a mac, so I found a G3 tower and started with that.

I started with a mental plan and a list as to what to do. I wanted 3 simple things at first, the mobo, PS and hard drive. I started with the standoffs, because the motherboard has to be grounded. I laid out the board on the bottom of the case and planned out where I wanted the holes. I then drilled them completely through. I hand't origianlly planned on that, I just wanted to screw them in. It was stronger to drill completely through and just bolt the board down.

One of the holes was slightly off, so I just widened it a little bit. Drilling everything and getting the board mounted took about 2 classes. Next on my list was to cut for the IO panel. I planned a cut at first with a hole saw, but that ended a little disastrously. It ended up digging into the metal and the drill whipped around and him me in the head. I decided I needed a new plan. IN the other room I was able to find a jigsaw, and I was able to cut it out within one class.

Then the other day, I was forced to rush with the power supply. I cut a hold for the plug and drilled all different size holes for the actual fan on it. I was only able to fabricate one mount before time ran out. I haven't been able to test it yet, I'm plaaing to do that on 1/11. All I have to finish is some wiring and neaten up a few cuts and it will be done. I hope that it works, and I wish I thought of it maybve 5 classes earlier than i did.

Finally, IT WORKS!!!

The power supply isn't properly mounted yet, but I plan to do that soon. It's a pretty cool success for me as it is one of the first custom computors that I have made.
